Protecting Trees in Los Angeles: Which Ones Are Protected by Law?

Don’t remove a tree without first consulting an arborist or other expert.

Have you ever wondered which trees are protected in the city of Los Angeles? It's important to know that the L.A. Municipal Code ensures the protection of certain tree species. These protected trees must be four inches or more in cumulative diameter and four and a half feet above the ground level at the base of the tree.

Many people are aware that oak trees are a protected class and cannot be removed unless they are diseased or dead. However, there are other tree species that are also protected under the L.A. Municipal Code. In addition to oak trees, which include the Valley Oak and the California Live Oak, other trees in the oak genus that are indigenous to California, not including the scrub oak, are also protected.

Other tree species that are protected in the city of Los Angeles include the Southern California Black Walnut, the Western Sycamore, and the California Bay. These trees are crucial for maintaining the ecological balance and biodiversity of the region.

If you are unsure whether a tree on your property is protected or not, it's best to seek the advice of a licensed arborist before taking any action. An arborist can help you identify the tree species and determine whether it's protected under the L.A. Municipal Code. If you have any questions about this or real estate in general, please feel free to contact me by phone call or email. I would be happy to assist you.
